World Engineering Day 2026: NIEEE Akure Chapter Calls for Innovation, Digital Transformation and a Sustainable Future
The Nigerian Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (NIEEE), Akure Chapter, proudly joined the global engineering community to commemorate the 2026 edition of World Engineering Day, using the moment to reaffirm the profession’s commitment to innovation, digital transformation, and sustainable development.

In his address, the Chairman of the Akure Chapter, Engr. Adedokun Adeyemi Adeyonu, FNIEEE, highlighted the significance of this year’s theme, “Smart Engineering for Sustainable Future through Innovation and Digitalization.”
According to him, the theme speaks directly to the responsibility placed on engineers to create practical, forward-looking solutions that not only solve today’s challenges but also safeguard the needs of future generations.
Engr. Adeyonu emphasized that smart engineering goes far beyond the mere adoption of modern technologies. He explained that it involves a deliberate rethinking of how systems are conceived, designed, managed, and improved to ensure sustainability, resilience, and fairness in the distribution of resources and opportunities.
In his view, engineering must remain a guiding force in building societies that are both technologically advanced and environmentally responsible.
He further noted that innovation and digitalization have become powerful tools transforming industries and improving efficiency across critical sectors such as energy, infrastructure, healthcare, and transportation.
These advancements, he explained, are opening new pathways for measurable progress while helping nations respond to complex developmental challenges in an increasingly interconnected world.
Reflecting on the realities facing Nigeria today, the Chairman observed that the country—like many others—is confronted with pressing issues including climate change, rapid urbanization, limited resources, and the fast pace of technological change.
He therefore called on engineers to take the lead in addressing these concerns by embedding sustainable principles at every stage of planning, design, and implementation.
Reaffirming the chapter’s dedication to growth and excellence, Engr. Adeyonu stated that the Akure Chapter remains committed to professional development, collaboration, and digital advancement.
He stressed that education, continuous learning, and inclusive participation are vital to building a future-ready engineering workforce capable of meeting both local and global demands.
As part of the celebration, members were encouraged to apply innovation responsibly and to pursue solutions that blend technological progress with environmental stewardship.
The Institute reiterated its support for initiatives that promote smarter cities, cleaner energy systems, and more efficient industrial practices that can positively impact communities.
World Engineering Day once again served as a powerful reminder of the indispensable role engineers play in national development and global progress.
