75-Year-Old Widow Rendered Homeless as Midnight Flood Sweeps Away Lifelong Property, Calls For Help From Well Meaning Nigerians
Tears flowed freely at Isikin Community, Off Oke Aro in Akure, Ondo State, as a devastating rainfall accompanied by a powerful flood rendered a 75-year-old widow, Mrs. Oluwafunke Veronica Kolawole, homeless after destroying her residence and sweeping away all her belongings in the early hours of Monday.
The aged woman, visibly shaken and emotionally broken, narrated her painful ordeal while speaking with Democrat News Magazine at the scene of the incident on Monday, May 18, 2026. According to her, the heavy downpour began around 4 a.m. and quickly turned into a terrifying flood disaster that caught residents unaware.
Mrs. Kolawole explained that the raging flood forcefully entered her apartment, destroying household items, valuables, and other properties she had laboured for throughout her life. The elderly widow described the incident as “the last straw that broke the camel’s back,” saying she has never witnessed such a terrifying experience in her lifetime.
“I was sleeping when the rain became very heavy. Before I knew what was happening, flood water had already taken over the house and swept many things away. As I struggled to run outside, part of the building suddenly collapsed. It was only God that saved my life,” she recounted amidst tears.
The heartbreaking condition of the elderly woman has continued to attract sympathy from neighbours and passersby, many of whom described her survival as miraculous. Her damaged apartment now stands as a painful reminder of the destructive effect of flooding caused by heavy rainfall in many communities.
Mrs. Kolawole, who revealed that she is a widow with no one to depend on, passionately appealed to government agencies, philanthropists, religious organizations, and compassionate Nigerians to urgently come to her rescue. She noted that she currently has no stable shelter, food, or resources to begin life afresh after the disaster.
“I am begging well-meaning Nigerians to help me. I have nobody to support me as a widow. At my age, I cannot do hard work anymore. Please, I need help to survive and get a place to stay,” she pleaded emotionally.
Residents of the area also called on emergency response agencies and humanitarian bodies to extend immediate assistance to the elderly woman, stressing that her condition requires urgent attention. They further appealed for improved drainage systems and proactive environmental measures to prevent future flood disasters within the community.
