Nigeria Workstation Joins APC: “Opposition Has Become Mere Echoes,” Says Convener Kennedy Peretei
In what many political observers describe as a major realignment in Ondo State politics, the Convener of Nigeria Workstation, Mr. Kennedy Ikantu Peretei, led members of the grassroots media and advocacy group to formally defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday at the Akure City Hall.
Addressing a large gathering of party stalwarts and supporters, Peretei anchored his speech on Harold Laswell’s classic definition of politics as “who gets what, when and how,” emphasizing that true political engagement must be aimed at forming government rather than merely existing as opposition.
> “If you are in politics and not in government, you are just in a social club,” Peretei declared, adding that opposition without coordination or focus lacks justification.
He explained that the decision by members of the Nigeria Workstation—a coalition of former members of the PDP, SDP, and AA—to join the APC was born out of a shared commitment to progressive governance. Also joining in the move were members of the Sunshine Grassroots Network, a group known for mobilizing at the community level to consolidate political structures.
Peretei recalled recent criticisms against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over claims of a push toward a one-party state, quoting the President’s sharp response: “It is not my business to organize the opposition.”
“Is there anything to add?” he asked rhetorically, to laughter and applause from the audience.
Declaring that the defection marked the end of meaningful opposition in Ondo State, Peretei asserted:
> “From today, there is only one party in Ondo State — the APC. Perhaps from the graveyard, there may be one or two shrill sounds, but those are mere echoes.”
He expressed gratitude to the Ondo APC Chairman, Engr. Ade Adetimehin, and the State Executive Committee for warmly welcoming the new entrants into the fold. Special appreciation was also extended to the Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, for his “fantastic support” in the build-up to the ceremony.
Peretei acknowledged several dignitaries who played key roles in the defection process, including Ambassador Sola Iji, Dr. Tob Loko, High Chief Ebi Molos, High Chief J.M. Magi, and High Chief P.M.S. Olopele, among others. He also recognized Senior High Chief Bibopere Ajube and Chief Matthew Oyerinmade (MATO) for their “endorsement and solidarity,” even in absentia.
A special mention was reserved for the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, whom Peretei described as the “Star Boy of the Tinubu administration” for his unwavering support in making the defection possible.
> “He has been our Rock of Gibraltar,” Peretei noted.
Concluding his remarks, the convener assured that the significance of the day’s event would be fully realized in the next electoral cycle, marking a decisive shift in the state’s political landscape.
> “We appreciate everyone who made today possible. The journey has just begun. God bless you all,” he said.
