Glow of Patriotism: Ondo NOA Director Leads Market Sensitization on Naira Respect, National Values & Youth Empowerment
In a heartwarming display of patriotism and civic responsibility, the Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Ondo State, Mr. James Adekunle, led his team on a spirited sensitization campaign across major markets in Akure, urging traders and residents to show respect for the Naira and uphold national values.
The public awareness exercise, which took place on Thursday, September 4, 2025, saw the NOA team move from Adegbele Cultural Centre through Old Garage, to the Deji’s Palace, and finally to NEPA Junction, engaging with market men and women along the route.
Speaking directly to journalists at the market square, Mr. Adekunle emphasized the need to treat the Naira with dignity, urging Nigerians to stop the misuse of the currency, such as squeezing, stepping on, or spraying it during celebrations.
“We must respect our Naira. It is a symbol of our national pride. Just as we must not deface our flag, we should not dishonor our currency. Let us protect these symbols that bind us together as a nation,” he passionately stated.
In a call to action, Mr. Adekunle encouraged parents to inform their children about the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NEFUND) — an interest-free loan initiative by the government aimed at supporting students in tertiary institutions. He emphasized that young Nigerians should take advantage of such beneficial policies that promote education and self-reliance.
On the issue of national security, Mr. Adekunle reminded the public of their civic duty like erosion prevention- calling on resident not to dump refuse in our drainages as not to prevent water course:
“Security is the responsibility of every citizen. If you see something, say something. Know the people around you, and do not hesitate to report suspicious individuals or activities. We must all remain vigilant.”
He also decried recent trends that undermine cultural values, particularly among students, criticizing the inappropriate celebrations witnessed during school graduations.
“It is disheartening to see young boys signing on the breasts of girls during school celebrations. This is a clear deviation from our moral values, and we will be working with stakeholders in the education sector to ensure such practices are prohibited in our society.”
The campaign, marked by a strong presence of NOA officials — including the Deputy Director, senior staff, and other team members — drew the attention of market dwellers who expressed appreciation for the agency’s grassroots approach.
The event served not just as a sensitization tour, but a powerful reminder of the roles every citizen must play in building a more respectful, secure, and value-driven Nigeria.
