Celebrating a Colossus at 99: Happy Birthday to Baba Reuben Fasoranti, A Living Legend of Yoruba Politics

Today, we raise our voices in heartfelt celebration of a man whose life is a beacon of wisdom, service, and unwavering dedication — Baba Reuben Fasoranti, the nonagenarian, the educator per excellence, the political coach, and the living torchbearer of progressive Yoruba politics.

A revered statesman, Baba Fasoranti stands tall in the annals of Nigerian history as a legend, a colossus, and a true icon of democratic resilience. As a NADECO chieftain, Afenifere leader, and seasoned educationist, he has left indelible footprints not only in Nigeria’s political landscape but also in the hearts of those fortunate to walk alongside him.

In his local community, Baba is more than a political leader; he is a father, a mentor, and a pathfinder. His sharp intellect and discerning mind — capable of detecting one’s cognitive, psychomotor, and affective capacities — have guided many in the worlds of politics and education. To us, he is our own “Political Westerhof,” spotting talent early and nurturing it with love and dedication.

Personally, I owe Baba an eternal debt of gratitude. His support in my political journey, especially in 1999 when I was the Alliance for Democracy candidate for Councilor in Lisa Ward 5, was monumental. Alongside the late Chief Fatoyinbo and my leader, the late Segun Omotosho, Baba personally campaigned for me, laying a foundation for my public service.

During a period of political turmoil in Akure South, Baba once summoned me and instructed me to return to school — specifically, to study law. That divine instruction, supported by the likes of Hon. Justice Bode Adegbehingbe (JCA) and Prof. Leke Oke of EKSU’s Political Science Department, transformed my life.

Despite his towering stature, Baba always remained humble — visiting his political sons, encouraging self-reliance, and refusing to enslave anyone politically. His leadership style was never about control but empowerment.

Today, we celebrate not just his birthday, but the legacy of a man rightly called the “Political Aristotle” of our time.

Happy Birthday, Baba Fasoranti! May your days be long, your wisdom continue to inspire, and your celebration today be as lavish and bountiful as the life you have lived in service of others.

With profound respect and love,
Hon. Barr. Kayode Taiwo Samson, LLM
Chairman, Akure East LCDA, Oda
