Nigeria @ 66: Time to Rebuild the Nation’s System for a Greater Future — Alaba Aliu
As Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary, the Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Democrat News Magazine, Alaba Aliu, has called for a comprehensive overhauling of the nation’s system, saying that the country needs bold, purposeful and sustainable reforms to unlock its enormous potential.
Aliu, in his Independence Day message, said the anniversary should not merely be a moment of celebration, but also an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect deeply on the journey of the nation, its achievements, challenges and the collective responsibility of building a stronger and more prosperous country.
According to him, Nigeria is blessed with abundant human and natural resources, a vibrant youthful population, intellectual capacity and immense economic opportunities, stressing that the major task before the country is to develop a system capable of effectively converting these resources into tangible benefits for the people.
The Democrat News Magazine Publisher emphasized the need for institutional reforms across various sectors of the economy, including education, healthcare, security, agriculture, infrastructure, public service and the justice system. He noted that strengthening these institutions would create an environment where citizens can thrive and businesses can grow.
Aliu also called for greater accountability, transparency and responsible leadership at all levels of government. He maintained that public office should be regarded as a sacred responsibility to the people rather than an avenue for personal enrichment, urging leaders and citizens alike to uphold the values of integrity, fairness and patriotism.
He further stressed the importance of creating more opportunities for young Nigerians, particularly through quality education, skills acquisition, entrepreneurship and meaningful employment. According to him, the energy and creativity of Nigerian youths remain critical assets that must be properly harnessed for national development.
The media practitioner equally appealed to Nigerians to embrace peace, unity and tolerance, irrespective of ethnic, religious, political or geographical differences. He said Nigeria’s diversity should be transformed into a source of strength and national cohesion rather than division.
While acknowledging the efforts of successive administrations in addressing some of the nation’s challenges, Aliu said more decisive and far-reaching reforms are required to build a system that works efficiently for the ordinary citizen. He urged Nigerians to remain hopeful and actively contribute their quota towards the development of the nation.
As Nigeria celebrates 66 years of independence, Alaba Aliu expressed optimism that with visionary leadership, responsible citizenship, effective institutions and a collective commitment to national renewal, the country can overcome its present challenges and emerge as a more peaceful, prosperous and united nation. He prayed for God’s continued guidance, protection and blessings upon Nigeria and her people at home and in the diaspora.
