10 Remanded Over Foiled Assassination Attempt on Igoba Monarch, Violent Attack on Residents

Ten suspects have been ordered to be remanded in prison custody until Friday, October 17, 2025, following their arraignment before a Magistrate Court in Akure over a violent assault on the Igoba community, including an alleged attempt to assassinate the town’s traditional ruler, Oba Adinlewa John, the Obaloogun of Igoba Land.

The accused — Seun Bankole (46), Alo Tolulope (32), Kolawole Kazeem (35), Seriki Lateef (35), Bankole Tobi (25), Sunday Amigun (32), Ayodele Saka (34), Adedayo Ogidan (43), Olaoluwa Kayode (26), and Ezekiel Vincent (31) — were arraigned before Magistrate Damilola Sekoni on Monday.

They face multiple charges, including illegal possession of firearms, dangerous weapons, and attempted assassination of the monarch of Igoba, a town located in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State.

According to the Ondo State Police Command, the suspects were apprehended following a coordinated attack on the community, which occurred on Thursday, October 2, 2025, around 11:30 a.m.

Police reports revealed that the assailants, armed with locally-made pistols, a single-barrel gun, live ammunition, knives, machetes, charms, and other weapons, stormed Igoba, causing widespread panic among residents.

During the rampage, a local resident, Mrs. Ogunoye Oluomo, sustained serious injuries and was robbed of her personal belongings.

The gang then allegedly advanced to the palace of Oba Adinlewa John, where they made a failed attempt on his life. The monarch was said to have narrowly escaped the attack.

Upon receiving a distress call, Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, swiftly deployed a tactical team led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Operations). The response led to the arrest of the ten suspects, who have reportedly confessed to their involvement during preliminary investigations.

At the court session, Magistrate Sekoni ordered that the accused should be remanded at Olokuta Prison custody .

Barrister Dan, who appeared as counsel representing the Igoba community, was present during the proceedings.

The matter was adjourned until Friday, October 17, 2025, for further hearing.
