Democracy Day: Oba Adegbehingbe Urges Nigerians to Uphold Democratic Values, Hails Governor Aiyedatiwa
As Nigeria marks this year’s Democracy Day on June 12, the Olumafon of Imafon, Oba Samuel Aliu Adegbehingbe, has called on citizens across the nation to uphold the foundational tenets of democracy in the spirit of national unity and progress. He emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in nurturing and strengthening Nigeria’s democratic journey.
In a statement made available to The Democrat News Magazine in Akure on Thursday, the revered traditional ruler noted that Nigeria’s democracy has come a long way and must be guarded with sincerity, patriotism, and dedication. According to him, the democratic system continues to evolve, and it is the duty of every Nigerian to ensure that the sacrifices of heroes past are not in vain.
Oba Adegbehingbe reflected on the historical significance of June 12, describing it as a day that represents resilience, people’s power, and the collective aspiration for good governance. He urged leaders at all levels to always prioritize the welfare of the people and remain accountable to the principles of justice, equity, and transparency.
While celebrating the strides Nigeria has made so far, the monarch warned against actions that could derail the democratic process. He encouraged young Nigerians to stay engaged, informed, and committed to civic participation, as they are the torchbearers of the country’s future.
In the same breath, Oba Adegbehingbe extended heartfelt congratulations to the Governor of Ondo State, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, for what he described as his exemplary leadership and commitment to democratic ideals. He praised the governor for standing as a shining example of what true democratic governance should represent.
